Blackmagic Design's Grant Petty on the Othermill

Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, with offices around the world, Blackmagic Design has been pushing the envelope on digital cinematography and production equipment since it was founded in 1984 by CEO Grant Petty. The company is known for making accessible, cutting-edge, high-end gear, previously cost-restrictive to all but professionals, a mission that strongly resonates with us here at Other Machine Co.

On their site, Petty explains, “Blackmagic Design is dedicated to allowing the highest quality video to be affordable to everyone, so the post production and television industry can become a truly creative industry.”

Recently, Petty picked up an Othermill, and after using it for just a couple of months, he gave us some stellar feedback, saying, "The Othermill is simply amazing and it does exactly what the description of it says it will do and much more. It’s much easier to use than I expected, and the software is just so wonderful. I use it personally for making Arduino shields to teach my kids electronics and use it at my company for building small controllers and other devices for product testing.”

With roots as a post-production facility engineer, Petty is incredibly passionate about the work they do at Blackmagic Design. In a previous interview, he stated, “The thing that annoys me the most is when the creative guys get screwed over. Too many manufacturers make products that are way too expensive or too complicated.” Later he added, “I’m trying to make it so the creatives can afford it and can take control of their lives.”

After many years as a dedicated post-production technology company, in 2012, Blackmagic Design announced they were expanding into the camera industry. They debuted a digital cinema-quality camera for under $3,000, rocking the industry. Today, their highly rated and acclaimed 4K camera, first released in 2013, retails for about $3,000, while comparable competitor models sell for anywhere from $16,000 to $20,000.

While prototyping with the Othermill, Petty was particularly impressed by our control software, Otherplan. He shared, “The software shows you exactly what the board is going to look like before you start milling, and it’s just so perfectly clear and elegantly designed. What I love is I can zoom in and see if all the tracks in the PCB are going to mill correctly so I can ensure the PCB can be made. And it imports the EAGLE PCB files direct so I don't need to do any weird file conversions. Every PCB it does just comes out perfect every time. It’s hard to believe it! It’s just so nice, I cannot say enough good things about the Othermill, and I would recommend it to anyone!"

He also mentioned the PCB blanks that we sell in our store, saying, “One thing I really like is the pre cut PCBs you guys sell. It might look like a simple thing but to be able to just buy a pack of PCBs and put them in saves a lot of time cutting material, as it’s all set up for it. It’s just so easy. The machine knows the size and it's really nice.”

Thanks, Grant — we applaud the work you all do at Blackmagic Design and can’t wait to see what you make next with your Othermill!
