Software Demo!

We’ve been working hard on the software side of the project. A lot of people have wanted to see an end to end demo of how cutting out a board will work. We put together a quick video, to show you the process from start to finish. There’s still lots to do, and some of the user interface is not finalized, but we have some pretty cool stuff up and running and we’re excited about how well it’s working.

At over 30 minutes, it’s a pretty long video, but it shows the entire process from powering the machine on to soldering the board. It’s not a complicated board, just a couple of LEDs and a coin cell holder, but it shows off the major steps needed to cut something out. We have implemented automatic board reloading, so you can have Eagle open in one window, and Othercam in another. When you save changes to your design, Othercam will automatically rebuild the motion plan, showing you in near realtime what the final result will look like. This should make the process of setting up a job considerably easier.

For the initial release we’re concentrating on two things: make Eagle board support work well, and make plain old GCode work smoothly. We expect that lots of folks will want to use 3rd party programs to generate their GCode motion plans, and so we’ve implemented a NIST compliant GCode path visualizer that recognizes the machine state, and shows you in real time where your GCode will make the machine go.
